Alexander Memorial Organ (1934)\, is one of the first and finest American classic-style organs and is among the largest church organs in the West. He utilizes beats\, loops\, and tanpura machines to compliment his joyful improvisations based on traditional Eastern ragas. He lives and performs regularly in the Bay Area; he is also a certified Yoga teacher.   \nPhoenix Song (formerly known as Amber Field) has been performing since 2004 and was featured in San Francisco Magazine’s Best of the Bay for yoga music in 2009. Currently a doctoral student at Juilliard\, Vogl is sure to dazzle us with his artistry. His program will feature virtuosic music of the 19th century by Max Reger\, and his own transcription of the final portion of Anton Bruckner’s Eighth Symphony\, a genre where our 1930s organ and cathedral acoustic excel. \nOur organ recital series features some of the finest organists playing one of America’s great organs. Grace Cathedral’s 7\,466-pipe Aeolian-Skinner instrument\, the Charles B. Alexander Memorial Organ (1934)\, is one of the first and finest American classic-style organs and is among the largest church organs in the West. Masks are strongly encouraged inside the cathedral.  \nAbout the Organist\nGerman organist Raphael Attila Vogl began his early musical study with cathedral organist Ludwig Ruckdeschel in Passau\, Germany. At the age of 18\, he attended the Hochschule für Katholische Kirchenmusik und Musikpädagogik (College for Catholic Church Music & Music Education) in Regensburg\, Germany. While in Regensburg\, he studied Organ Performance and Church Music under Stefan Baier and Markus Rupprecht. Subsequently\, he studied under László Fassang for one year at the Franz-Liszt-Academy in Budapest\, Hungary. Raphael graduated with a Master’s degree in Organ Performance from the world-famous Juilliard School in 2020\, where he studied under the Grammy Award-winning Paul Jacobs. The following year\, he was admitted to the most advanced course of study offered at The Juilliard School — The Doctor of Musical Arts.  \nRaphael A. Vogl has participated in various competitions\, winning prizes in The International Mendelssohn Organ Competition in Switzerland\, The International Tariverdiev Competition in Russia\, and The Boulder Bach Festivals World Bach Competition. Raphael made his Alice Tully Hall debut in 2020\, where he performed the New York premiere of Sophia Gubaidulina’s The Rider on the White Horse at the Focus Festival at Lincoln Center. His epic 4-disc masterwork\, The Disintegration Loops\, received international critical acclaim and was chosen as one of the top 50 albums of 2004 by Pitchfork. Basinski was chosen by music director Antony Hegarty to score the Robert Wilson opera\, The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic. Orchestral transcriptions of The Disintegration Loops by Maxim Moston have been performed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Queen Elizabeth Hall\, and La Batie Festival in Geneva\, Switzerland. With Preston Wendel he released a jazz-inflected LP under the name Sparkle Division\, with special guests such as the late Henry Grimes on upright bass. In March 2022 the album “. . on reflection” by William Basinski & Janek Schaefer was released by Temporary Residence\, Ltd. \nFLORE LAURENTIENNE draws inspiration from the rivers and rugged wilderness of his native Quebec. Rev. Austin Keith Rios was ordained and consecrated Bishop Coadjutor of the Episcopal Diocese of California on May 4\, 2024. He served in the coadjutor role until after the retirement of the Rt. Rev. Dr. Marc Handley Andrus on July 31\, 2024. Following Bishop Marc’s retirement Bishop Rios assumed the role of Ninth Bishop of California\, becoming the diocese’s chief pastor. He is responsible for leading\, supervising\, and uniting our congregations\, ministries\, and diocesan institutions. Bishop Rios is the first Latino to be elected as a bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of California. His heritage includes Mexican American ancestry from his father’s side and Scottish and English ancestry from his mother’s side. Although English was spoken at home\, Bishop Rios decided to embrace his Latino heritage at an early age by learning Spanish\, which he now speaks fluently along with Italian. Before joining the Diocese of California\, Bishop Rios served for 12 years as the rector of St. Paul’s Within the Walls Episcopal Church in Rome\, Italy\, a multilingual and multicultural community that houses and offers The Joel Nafuma Refugee Center as its primary outreach. Additionally\, he spent five years as the Rector of La Capilla de Santa Maria\, a Spanish-speaking congregation in Hendersonville\, North Carolina\, while also serving as the Canon for Spanish-Speaking Ministries in the Diocese of Western North Carolina. Bishop Rios has served the wider Episcopal Church in various capacities\, including multiple terms as a deputy to the General Convention. In 2018\, he was elected to a six-year term as a trustee of the Church Pension Fund and served as Vice Chair of its Investment Committee. In 2024\, he was elected Vice Chair of the Church Pension Fund and re-elected as a trustee. Bishop Rios calls several places home\, including Texas\, where he was born; Rome\, Italy; North Carolina; Wisconsin; Louisiana; and now\, the San Francisco Bay Area. With its distinct character and tremendous diversity\, Bishop Rios looks forward to becoming part of the region’s fabric and discovering how its many wonderful people and places will shape the trajectory of his life.
