SUMMARY:The Forum with Michael Goldberg: Jukebox
DESCRIPTION:In this special summer Forum\, meet Addicted To Noise founder and former Rolling Stone senior writer Michael Goldberg and get a firsthand account of the first-ever collection of his photographs in the new book JUKEBOX: 1967-2023 Photographs. \nAlong with some of rock’s biggest stars (Bob Dylan\, the Rolling Stones\, the Who\, Neil Young)\, the collection features an impressive array of underground figures and outcast luminaries captured in their natural habitat\, most seen here for the first time anywhere. Bridging the gaps between the late ‘60s psychedelic era\, primitive first-wave ‘70s punk\, and soul & reggae\, as well as never-before seen images of country and folk iconoclasts and rule-breakers across the spectrum\, and even including some modern artists still making waves\, JUKEBOX is a riveting photography collection that truly feels as good as it looks. \n“A visual encyclopedic history of rock & roll and pop culture as it really was. Michael Goldberg was there and documented it as it happened. A behind the scenes and real look at icons through the ages.” – Laurie Kratochvil\, award winning Director of Photography at Rolling Stone (1982-1994) and editor of more than a dozen photo books including 20 Years of Rolling Stone What A Long\, Strange Trip It’s Been \nGoldberg is best known as a writer\, but for over 50 years he’s also been photographing musicians and the photos in JUKEBOX are drawn from the thousands he’s taken over the years. The book’s Foreword is written by acclaimed music book author Joel Selvin: “Come for the big names – Stones\, Dead\, Van\, The Band; stay for the beautiful faces from the distant past – Tim Buckley\, Professor Longhair\, Sal Valentino. An extraordinary portfolio from any shooter\, let alone one we know primarily as a writer.” \nMichael Goldberg writes: “This is a book of musicians I’ve dug over the years\, musicians whose recordings moved me (and still move me)\, musicians I was lucky enough to photograph. I think these particular photos are my best\, and I hope you find them unique\, and at times mysterious; there are many excellent photographers of musicians\, but none of them took these photographs.” \nJoin Dean Malcolm Clemens Young for a conversation with Michael about his experience with the musicians\, the challenges of photographing musicians\, and his pioneering career in writing about music. \nPhotos from JUKEBOX will be on display from July 25 through September 22\, 2024 at the Haight Street Art Center in San Francisco\, where the exhibition\, We Are the One: San Francisco Punk 1970s & 1980s\, curated by Goldberg\, will also be featured during those two months. An opening party celebrating both shows will take place on August 2. \nJUKEBOX will be available for sale at The Forum. \nThe Forum will be posted on our Youtube and Apple Podcast channels.    \nAbout the Guest\nMichael Goldberg is a distinguished pioneer in the online music space; Newsweek magazine called him an ‘Internet visionary.’ In 1994 he founded Addicted To Noise\, the highly influential music website. Addicted To Noise won Webby awards for best music site in 1998 and 1999\, and also won Yahoo Internet Life! awards for three years running as best music site in 1998\, 1999 and 2000. Prior to starting Addicted To Noise\, Goldberg was an editor and senior writer at Rolling Stone magazine for 10 years and senior vice-president and editor in chief at SonicNet from 1997 through 2000. His writing has also appeared in Wired\, Esquire\, Vibe\, Details\, Downbeat\, NME\, and numerous other publications. Michael has had three novels published that comprise the “Freak Scene Dream trilogy”: True Love Scars\, The Flowers Lied and Untitled. Other books include Wicked Game: The True Story of Guitarist James Calvin Wilsey and Addicted To Noise: The Music Writings of Michael Goldberg. \nAbout the Moderator  \nThe Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young is the dean of Grace Cathedral. He is the author of The Spiritual Journal of Henry David Thoreau and The Invisible Hand in Wilderness: Economics\, Ecology\, and God\, and is a regular contributor on religion to the Huffington Post and San Francisco Examiner. \nAbout The Forum\nThe Forum is a series of stimulating conversations about faith and ethics in relation to the important issues of our day. We invite inspiring and illustrious people to sit down for a real conversation with the Forum’s host and with you. Our guests range from artists\, inventors\, and philosophers to pop culturists and elected officials\, but the point of The Forum is singular: civil\, sophisticated discourse that engages minds and hearts to think in new ways about the world.  More about Grace Forum Online. \nGive to Grace\nYou can help us bring the arts to life at Grace with a gift today to The Forum. Click here to give.    \nBecome a GraceArts Member\nLove engaging dialogue? We offer a special cultural membership program\, GraceArts\, focused exclusively on the arts and well-being. GraceArts allows a wider community to belong to and support Grace\, with discounts and benefits on a robust schedule of events. Learn more and join!

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Love\, A State of Grace
DESCRIPTION:About the Film \nLove\, a state of grace was a four-day installation performed in February\, 2022. Choreographed and directed by Joanna Haigood\, artistic director of Zaccho Dance Theatre\, the performance featured six of the Bay Area’s most talented aerial dancers; a sound score composed by MacArthur Fellow Walter Kitundu; and original props by collaborating designers Wayne Campbell and Sean Riley\, including an anchored 100-foot ladder and 70-foot swinging pendulum\, each a unique response to the rhythms and height of the cathedral’s Gothic design. \nAmid the cathedral’s towering ceiling\, stained glass windows\, and cavernous chambers\, performers ascended a 100-foot ladder and soared on a 70-foot swinging pendulum\, defying gravity with equanimous grace. \nThe film of the installation\, co-directed by Joanna Haigood and Bryan Gibel\, captures the multifaceted immersive meditation on vulnerability\, courage\, and loving attunement to our common humanity\, told through the mesmerizing art of aerial dance. \nIf you were lucky enough to attend a performance\, see the film to remember how beautiful and how moving Love\, a state of grace was; if you missed the performance\, see the film\, shown in the cathedral where it happened – it will almost be like being there. \nJoanna and Bryan will speak briefly about the creation of the installation and the film\, and answer questions following the screening. \nWatch\nLove\, A State of Grace (2023) TRAILER \nEvent Details\nFree admission with advance registration. \nGive to Grace\nYour gift helps Grace Cathedral realize its vision: a spiritually alive world. SUMMARY:Saint John Coltrane Invitational Sonic Ascension Day Jazz Vespers
DESCRIPTION:Grace Cathedral is pleased to host Saint John Coltrane Church of San Francisco as they celebrate the 57th year of Ascension of Saint John Coltrane and the 65th year of Ascension of Billy Holiday. Canonized by the African Orthodox Church in 1982\, John Coltrane\, saxophone player and composer\, released 38 albums\, including A Love Supreme and such individual masterpieces as “Giant Steps” and “Equinox.” Billie Holiday\, joyfully nicknamed “Lady Day” by fellow musician Lester Young\, was a powerful influence on jazz. Her searing rendition of the song “Strange Fruit” left an indelible imprint on the consciousness of the nation that continues to move our spirits today.   \nInspired by Duke Ellington’s “Concert of Sacred Music” performed at Grace Cathedral in 1965\, the theme of the celebration remains\, as St. John Coltrane said it: “The love that holds the universe together.” By proclamation of former Mayor Willie Brown and Mayor London Breed\, July 20 is Saint John Coltrane Day in the city of San Francisco.  \nThis is a free worship service – an offering will be collected and merchandise will be available for purchase. \nEvent Details\nDoors open at 6:30 pm. The entrance to the cathedral is at the top of the Great Steps. The accessible entrance is via the glass doors on Taylor Street or from the cathedral garage. Masks are strongly encouraged inside the cathedral.

SUMMARY:The Forum with Malcolm Harris: Palo Alto
DESCRIPTION:The history of Silicon Valley\, from railroads to microchips\, is an “extraordinary” story of disruption and destruction\, told for the first time in this comprehensive\, jaw-dropping narrative (Greg Grandin\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The End of the Myth). Palo Alto’s weather is temperate\, its people are educated and enterprising\, its corporations are spiritually and materially ambitious and demonstrably world-changing. Palo Alto is also a haunted toxic waste dump built on stolen Indian burial grounds\, and an integral part of the capitalist world system. \nIn PALO ALTO: A History of California\, Capitalism\, and the World\, the first comprehensive\, global history of Silicon Valley\, Malcolm Harris examines how and why Northern California evolved in the particular\, consequential way it did\, tracing the ideologies\, technologies\, and policies that have been engineered there over the course of 150 years of Anglo settler colonialism\, from IQ tests to the “tragedy of the commons\,” racial genetics\, and “broken windows” theory. The Internet and computers\, too. It’s a story about how a small American suburb became a powerful engine for economic growth and war\, and how it came to lead the world into a surprisingly disastrous 21st century. \nJoin Malcolm Clemens Young for a conversation with Harris about his urgent and visionary history of the way we live now\, and his radical proposition for how we might begin to change course.

SUMMARY:2000 Dragons by Don Ed Hardy
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss the rare opportunity to see 2000 Dragons by the classic Bay Area artist and tattooist\, Don Ed Hardy. This monumental 4’ x 500’ work was created in the year 2000 (a Dragon Year in the Asian zodiac\, as is 2024!)\, and was a decisive turning point for Hardy\, in both its scale and expansive gesture\, as he had spent the previous four decades in near-daily practice with the obsessive precision of intaglio printmaking\, lithography\, tattooing\, and careful watercolors. His goal to draw two thousand dragons with no preplanned composition freed Hardy to explore pure abstract elements along with recognizable forms. \nLearn about the creation of 2000 Dragons. \nPlease note\, the $12 counts towards your general admission cost. Along with viewing 2000 Dragons\, you experience the interactive self-guided journey! \nClick on any date to learn more or reserve your ticket here.

Joshua Kosman (San Francisco Chronicle) declared that Friction Quartet is “an artist who should be discovered” and described their performance as “high-octane music making…a fine blend of rhythmic ferocity and tonal flair.” \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgram\nHugo Wolf – Mignon Lieder (arranged by Otis Harriel)\nMichi Wianko – To Unpathed Waters\, Undreamed Shores\nMissy Mazzoli – Harp and Altar\nNoah Luna – The Highwayman (Friction commission) \nEvent Details\nThe cathedral will open for seating at 7 pm.
